Evidence of high-spin and low-spin form of hemoproteids using electron spin resonance

, : Evidence of high-spin and low-spin form of hemoproteids using electron spin resonance. Biochim Biophys Acta 94(2): 516-524

Methemoglobin and some of its compounds have been studied as highly concentrated solutions at the deep temperature of liquid air, using electron spin resonance. Methemoglobin fluoride as a pure high-spin complex showed an ESR spectrum with g factors of g[image] = 6 and g[image] - 2. Methemoglobin azide as pure low-spin complex appears in the ESR spectrum as a well resolved line with 3 g factors of about 2. The methemoglobin compounds, which are to be conceived as thermal mixtures of high- and low-spin complexes as well as the methemoglobin itself show in the ESR spectrum the corresponding high-spin share with the g factor 6 and a broad line at g = 2 for the low-spin share.
