Experimental contribution to the problem of parenchymatous-spleno pulmonic anastomosis in the dog

, : Experimental contribution to the problem of parenchymatous-spleno pulmonic anastomosis in the dog. Zeit Ges Exptl Med 136(1): 1-10

A method to implant a part of the spleen through a slit in the diaphragm into the left lower lobe of the dog's lung is described and illustrated. A fixation of the fundus of the stomach to the diaphragm between the esophagus and the slit in the diaphragm diminishes the possibilities of complications. None of the 15 operated dogs died during or shortly after operation and all of the 5 animals in which the fixation was carried out survived in good condition, as long as more than 1 1/2 years. Without fixation 6 of 10 dogs died in a period of 19 days to 10 weeks. Within 3 weeks after operation, anastomoses to the lung veins become established. The anastomoses were open 7 1/2 months after operation without elevation of the portal pressure.
