Experimental contribution to the problem of regeneration after traumatic lesion of peripheral nerves

, : Experimental contribution to the problem of regeneration after traumatic lesion of peripheral nerves. Helvetica Chir Acta 15(2): 108-124

The present article opens with a short survey of the phenomena of degeneration and regeneration that follow upon traumatic lesions of peripheral nerves. It then proceeds to summarize the state of our knowledge today of the therapeutic possibilities in regard to such lesions. This knowledge is mostly of an empirical nature. On the basis of several sample expts. dealing with nerve suture and nerve transplantation with and without sheathing of the suture areas, the article further shows that, histolog-ically speaking, opt. healing results are obtained through sheathing of the nerve suture areas with cuffs of a rigid consistency filled with autogenous plasma. The results achieved by this method show, histologically, a fundamental difference from those obtained by nerve suture or transplantation without sheathing of the suture areas. They also promise hopeful clinical results.
