Extensor reflexes in the fore-limb

, : Extensor reflexes in the fore-limb. Journal of Physiology 65(3): 305-326

The explanation of the fact that in cats stimulation of the nerves to the forelimb readily evokes extension, not flexion, is found in the mixed character of the nerves. Stimulation of the median nerve at the wrist, or in the digital clefts, causes contraction of the supraspinatus (extension), but stimulation of the forearm branch of the median nerve or stretching the flexor digitorum profundus inhibits this reflex, as does also stimulation of the ulnar nerve. Brachialis anticus behaves like a flexor muscle, though not in a typical manner, since it shows marked response to contralateral nerve stimulation and has a well maintained stretch-reflex.
