Fertilizing the orchard in wartime

, : Fertilizing the orchard in wartime. Proc Ohio State Hort Soc 76: 100-107

The value of fruit in the diet has been recognized since the outbreak of the war in Europe as never before in the history of the fruit industry. Hence maximum yield of quality fruit becomes an obligation of the orchardist.[long dash]An adequate supply of nutrients has been demonstrated to be essential to optimum growth, flowering, fruit setting and fruit production. Excessive N is usually detrimental to max. production, to color development and keeping quality of fruit. Moisture and N are more likely to be lacking in orchards in large areas of the U. S. than any other factors.[long dash]The mulch system in orcharding as practiced in Ohio has provided a large part of the elements necessary for fruit production through decomposition of the mulch and leaching of nutrients into the soil. Available K. P, Ca, N, Mg and B were considerably higher in the soil beneath a mulch than in adjacent cultivated orchard land.
