Formation of arterial collaterals under the effect of ultrasound

, : Formation of arterial collaterals under the effect of ultrasound. Arkhiv Anatomii, Gistologii i Embriologii 52(1): 43-51

The formation of arterial collaterals after excision of the femoral arteries and simultaneous elimination in different combinations of the afferent, afferent and sympathetic links of the reflex arc in the dog's thigh was studied. An injury of any link of the reflex arc affects formation of the arterial collaterals. Means of improving the collateral blood circulation should be searched for not in a disturbance of the wholeness of the nervous system, produced by surgical intervention, but in the application of some biological stimulators, contributing to regeneration and growth of the vessels, such as ultrasound, which gives a positive effect in treatment of wounds and other pathological processes. The femoral artery from the groin groove to the femoral-popliteal canal in both pelvic limbs of 15 dogs was excised. After operation on the right leg ultrasound was applied while the left served as control. The application of ultrasound in small doses powerfully stimulated formation of arterial collaterals. Ultrasonic treatment is a painless and simple means of improving collateral blood circulation.
