Geographic variation in the lesser tree-swift

, : Geographic variation in the lesser tree-swift. Condor 62(1): 3-6

Most recent authors recognize only 2 of a total of 5 proposed sspp. of the lesser tree-swift, Hemiprocne comata. The race major supposedly inhabits the Philippines north of Mindanao, and nominate comata the southern Philippines and the remainder of the species' range in the East Indies and Malay Peninsula. It is shown that only 1 ssp. can be recognized throughout the Philippines; the name major is retained for this ssp., which differs from comata in the shape of the tail feathers, a hitherto overlooked character, as well as in some color characters.
