H2S, the cause of the bruzone disease of rice

, : H2S, the cause of the bruzone disease of rice. Soil And Plant Food 4: 37-40

The H produced during cellulose fermentation after soil flooding is the energy source for SO4-reducing bacteria, the resulting S-- ions yielding H2S. H2S destroyed roots at pH 7, and damaged plants at pH 8. Plant damage increased in sunless weather during which the pH rose. Diminished O supply and ability to photosynthesize- during sunless weather result in plant inability to combat H2S by oxidation, with consequent susceptibility to bruzone.
