Infectivity measurements of partially degraded tobacco mosaic virus

, : Infectivity measurements of partially degraded tobacco mosaic virus. Virology 1(4): 402-407

After a brief heat treatment with the detergent Duponol C, a preparation of tobacco mosaic virus was found to have between 10% and 25% of its original infectivity. The infectivity activity then could be greatly reduced by incubation with crystalline pancreatic ribonuclease. From these results and the results of control tests, it was inferred that the virus particles can remain infectious after some of the protein has been removed so as to partly expose the ribonucleic acid (RNA), but that the integrity of the RNA itself is essential for infectivity.
