Influence of PH and salt content of medium on serological and cultural characters of the typhoid-paratyphoid, proteus and dysentery groups

, : Influence of PH and salt content of medium on serological and cultural characters of the typhoid-paratyphoid, proteus and dysentery groups. Zentralbl Bakt I Abt Orig 113(5/6): 395-403

Both agglutinin-producing and non-agglu-tinin-producing bacteria are dependent on the PH and salt content of media. The optimum reaction for antibody production by B. typhosus is acid; for B. proteus, alkaline; for B. paratyphosus B, neutral. The H-antigen of all bacteria is sensitive to increase in salt concentration. The slimy wall phenomenon with the bacillus of Breslau may be induced both by extreme alkaline and by extreme acid conditions, as well as by increase in NaCl-concentration. The phenomenon occurs most markedly when there is a loss in the H-substance as contrasted to the halo phenomenon in the proteus group, as a purely endoplasmatic result arising from the O-sub-stance. Extreme acid condition causes paratyphoid bacilli to produce R colonies characterized by their rough and non-transparent growth and by being easily washed off the medium with NaCl solution.
