Influence of cations of the alkaline and alkaline earth metals on the physical electrotonus of a denuded frog nerve

, : Influence of cations of the alkaline and alkaline earth metals on the physical electrotonus of a denuded frog nerve. Fiziol Zh Sssr Im I M Sechenova 52(1): 22-28

The very small size of the catelectrotonus (CET) of the denuded nerve, which indicates a high permeability of the membrane of the nerve fibers for Cl, is noteworthy. The K ion raises this permeability still more. However, in addition to this, K raises the permeability for Na also. The Rb and Cs ions are close in their physiological action to K ions. The cations of the alkaline earth metals all increase the catelectrotonus (CET), but not identically. Mg is least of all, and Ba most of all active in these respects.
