The types of lasers available for possible biomedical applications and some simple experiments using a low-power gas laser were described. There are several advantages in using laser sources in oximeter and dye detection apparatus. A parallel beam of radiation is obtained with negligible beam spread. No focusing or filtering is required to control the optical beam. The power available in a narrow spectral range is much greater in the laser than from any other source, and many w/A can be obtained. This high power level eliminates many of the detection problems associated with nonlaser sources. In addition, the very precise laser wavelength enables one to calibrate accurately. The coherence properties of the radiation are useful, particularly for a variety of other applications.
