Mandragore, racine hantee qui protege ou qui tue

, : Mandragore, racine hantee qui protege ou qui tue. Mandragore, racine hantee qui protege ou qui tue 92p 8 fig

The taxonomy and distr. of Mandragora officinarum, M. autumnalis, and M. caulescens comprise the first chapter. The largest chapter concerns the history of folklore and legend, magic and medicine from prehistoric times to the present. The 3d chapter, on the pharmacology and chemistry of mandrake, outlines its use for relaxing involuntary muscles, hypnotic and aphrodisiac effects, and therapy of epileptic and anxiety states, as used anciently and at present, including a few recent case histories. Its toxicology and chemistry are surveyed. The conclusion argues that the drug is useful, however dangerous. Scarcity and variability of prepns. should lead to further research on Mandragora rather than its abandonment.
