Subcut. inj. of lecithin in rabbits produced only local fat deposition. The phosphatide was taken up by local cells and soon converted into neutral fats and fatty acids. In repeated intraperit. inj. the peritoneum reacted by forming a layer of granulation-like tissue. In the upper layers of this tissue the phago-cytic cells were seen, by their reaction to the Smith-Dietrich stain, to be rich in unchanged phosphatide; in the lower layers, the lipids, though present in relatively large quantity, were chiefly neutral fats and fatty acids and stained well with Scharlach R. In short expts. similar breakdown of phosphatide occurred without formation of granulation tissue, local mesothelial cells of the peritoneum performing the phagocytic function. Intraven. injections produced a lipoidosis of the reticulo-endothelial organs, chiefly the liver, lungs and spleen, with little changes elsewhere. This lipid infiltration disappeared within a few days, no matter how great or how frequent the injected dose of lecithin. It appeared impossible by these methods to produce an infiltration of fat into the c. n. system; and such infiltration in diseases like amaurotic familial idiocy, Niemann-Pick's disease and Gaucher's disease must result from some deep-seated endogenous disturbance involving fat metabolism in the r.-e. system or the c. n. s. or both.
