Nephrogenic arterial hyper-tension and adrenalectomy in the rat

, : Nephrogenic arterial hyper-tension and adrenalectomy in the rat. Rev Soc Argentina Biol 18(1): 13-23

Permanent hypertension was produced in rats by wrapping a kidney in gauze and collodion. Following this operation studies were made of blood pressure variation, the condition of the eyegrounds and heart, the level of NPN, the influence of the removal of the intact kidney, the influence of adrenal insufficiency and its correction with desoxycorticosterone. Blood pressure increases of 25-104% above the initial value were obtained within 3-10 days after operation. Bilateral adrenalectomy causes the blood pressure to return abruptly to normal levels. The injn. of desoxy-corticosterone into the adrenalectomized animals increased the blood pressure but not to the previous hypertensive level. If the rat survived the adrenalectomy, a progressive increase in pressure was noted and hypertrophied accessory adrenals were found.
