The oil content dropped from 26% in the seed to 4% in the 15 day seedling. The hydrolysis of this oil was probably responsible for an r. q. of 0.3 and low cyanide sensitivity of the O2 absorption by the seedlings. Cytochrome-c and suc-cinic-dehydrogenase were either absent or present in very small quantities in the seedling. Thiamin was high in the seed (17 [gamma]/gm.) but the total decreased during germination.
