Observations on the behavior of roe deer

, : Observations on the behavior of roe deer. Schweiz Zeit Forstw 113(11): 660-668

The distribution of roe deer on a 137-ha forest compartment in Aargau (Argovie), Switzerland, was studied intensively by frequent observations during the winters 1960-1961 and 1961-1962. Recorded were sex, age class, number of animals in a group (1-4), location and exposure. The average population for the 2 years was 13 bucks and 21 does. The population density varied widely with topography and forage conditions. Determination of proper stocking rates should take account of local variations. Heavy reduction of young deer is desirable not only to limit total numbers, but also to obtain a distribution that will result in more favorable winter environment for the deer.
