Observations on the repair of injuries to bone growing from autografts in rabbits

, : Observations on the repair of injuries to bone growing from autografts in rabbits. Anatomical Record 137: 101-117

Bone growing from marrow and cancellous bone autografts made into transparent chambers in rabbits was injured repeatedly by small excisions and the repair studied from day to day in the living animal. Repair of injury was the same process as that by which the graft extended peripherally. Growth and repair occurred chiefly where circulation was slowest. Hemorrhage and granulation tissue are not essential for repair of small bone wounds. Repair of injury began with fiber formation of a characteristic sort, probably initiated by fibroblast-like cells covering bone adjacent in the injury. Osteocytes contributed nothing visible to the healing.
