On the behavior of the electroencephalogram after osmo-oncotherapy in the cerebral pressure and -oedema

, : On the behavior of the electroencephalogram after osmo-oncotherapy in the cerebral pressure and -oedema. Acta Neurochir 17(1/2): 71-102

The effects of osmotic and oncotherapy with hypertonic sorbitol and Rheomacrodex solutions on brain function (as measured by the eeg frequencies) were studied. Also studied were the effects of osmotic oncotherapy and how they can be recognized after osmotic oncotherapy both in mean eeg frequency and in frequency analysis. The frequencies of the affected and the normal hemisphere and their frequencies are recorded both over the tumor and over the corresponding contralateral region of the brain. The course of this change in eeg frequency is largely independent of the course of pressure reduction in the cerebrospinal fluid. Eeg changes are far more closely related to the change in the oxygen carrying capacity of the total circulation. The highly variable relation between the increase of cardiac minute volume in the general circulation and the increase of cerebral blood flow after sorbitol and after Rheomacrodex indicates the role of the specific regulation of the cerebral circulation in maintaining a constant oxygen partial pressure in the cerebral veins. By a correlative study of the eeg frequency analysis and induced changes in hemodynamics and of other parameters, some insight into the causes of the functional disturbances of the central nervous system in cerebral edema can be obtained.
