On the degree of differentation in the primate order according to characteristics of the brain

, : On the degree of differentation in the primate order according to characteristics of the brain. First Congress of the International Primatological Society, 26-30 July, 1966 108-119

The neocortex displays strong progression in the primate order. Its enlargement is a good cerebral indicator for determining the degree of evolution. Indices of neocorti-calization evaluated through the allometric method are directly comp-parable because they are independent of body size. The indices are used to construct an order of rank. Starting with the most primitive forms, represented by the Tupaiidae and the Lepilemurini (in which the neocortex is only 9 times as large as in basal insectivores)extending to man (in which it is over 200 times as large) there are many living primate species representing different steps of progression. Comparative -neuroanatomical studies in this order of rank (= ascending primate scale) provides a well established basis indicating evolutionary trends in various parts of the brain.
