On the diagnosis of certain plant infectious diseases by means of serological reactions

, : On the diagnosis of certain plant infectious diseases by means of serological reactions. Jour Soc Trop Agric 1(1): 14-22

To secure immune bodies, rabbits were inoculated intraperitoneally with suspensions of living organisms of Bacillus sp. isolated from soft rot of "Petsai," radish, and turnip, B. caratovorus from carrot, and Bacterium sp. from "Petsai" and other related species. Inoculations were made at intervals of 2 days, using 1 cc. of the suspensions for the 1st and 2 cc. for each of the remaining 5 injections. The rabbits were bled on the 9th day after the last inoculation. Antigens were prepared from portions of diseased plant tissues (after incubation) and filtrates made. When antisera were added separately to the filtrates, agglutination in the suspensions and precipitation in the clear solutions occurred only in homologous antigens, thus showing the tests are specific for each organism studied and applicable to the diagnosis of the disease in question. It is considered that serological methods may be employed to identify certain infectious plant diseases if the expressed juice of the diseased organs is properly added to the antisera prepared from the suspected organisms.
