Physiological Monitoring Of Animals During Space Flight

, : Physiological Monitoring Of Animals During Space Flight. Biomedical Sciences Instrumentation 1: 299-307

The physiological problems relating to space flight are discussed with emphasis on the cardiovascular system. An orbiting animal experiment is described which will permit a long-term, broad spectrum analysis of cardiovascular function. Central to this study will be the determination of cardiac output using the dye dilution technique. The apparatus which is used to implement this determination is discussed and diagrams are pre -sented to prototype versions. A multipurpose design is proposed which will permit the additional determination of respiration rate, blood volume, arterial and venous pressures, electrocardiogram, and hemoglobin, oxyhemoglobin and plasma protein concentrations.
