Proof of thyroidal uptake of radioactive iodine in the functional diagnosis of thyropathy

, : Proof of thyroidal uptake of radioactive iodine in the functional diagnosis of thyropathy. Acta Isotipica 1(3): 293-308

Results of the 24-hour radioiodine uptake in 400 subjects with normal and pathological conditions of the thyroid are presented. The following mean values have been observed: normal subjects (84 cases) 51,2 [plus or minus]13,1%; nontoxic goiter (47 cases) 63,3 [plus or minus]18%; hyperthyroidism (243 cases) 74,5 [plus or minus]11,7%; hypothyroidism (25 cases) 13,3 [plus or minus]11,8%. These values appear to be noticeably higher in comparison to those observed with similar patients by other investigators. It is suggested that this behavior could depend on a regional iodopenic condition. The wide overlap between euthyroid and hyparthyroid groups greatly limits the clinical significance of this test in the diagnosis of hyparthyroidism. In fact, only values up to 77% can be taken in account for a thyroid hyperfunction in patients without goiter, while very little significance can be attributed to values up to 77% in patients with goiter. The 24-hour uptake test appears to be reliable in the diagnosis of hypothyroidism, when values lower than 26% are found.
