Remote photodynamic effects of ultra-violet irradiation on secretion of gastric juice

, : Remote photodynamic effects of ultra-violet irradiation on secretion of gastric juice. Acta Medica Scandinavica 150(5): 407-411

The exposure of the skin of white pigeons to UV rays of 2537 A for 20 minutes resulted in the secretion of acid gastric juice during the hour following exposure. This secretion could be greatly inhibited by the previous administration of anthisan, and is probably due to the action of histamine liberated as a photochemical product in the skin. This was further supported by the fact that it could be diminished or completely arrested by the previous administration of colchicine. When yeast was given for a few days before exposure this inhibition was removed. The occurrence of such a secretion may explain some of the clinical beneficial digestive effects following UV irradiation.
