Report of the Committee on Bird Protection, 1939

, : Report of the Committee on Bird Protection, 1939. Auk 57(2): 279-291

Bird spp. most endangered are the California Condor, Ekimo Curlew, and Ivory-billed Woodpecker, All 3 are probably doomed; the Curlew may already be extinct. Chances for survival of the Whooping Crane are only slightly better. The Trumpeter Swan has made a slow but encouraging increase to about 190 birds in the U. S. and 500 in Canada, but is by no means out of danger. Food resources of the Everglades Kite have been depleted by drainage, drouth, and fires. Continual indiscriminating predator campaigns, unwise drainage for mosquito and flood control, water diversion projects, and drouth and fires in the Florida Everglades have unfavorably affected bird life. Local shrinkages of faunas are alarming because they are not as obvious as continental shrinkages. On the other hand, bettejr law enforcment, increased habitat restoration, educational work and establishment of refuges and other protected areas are encouraging developments.
