Repository forms of adreno-corticotropin

, : Repository forms of adreno-corticotropin. Jour Clin Endocrinol And Metab 19(6): 711-716

The duration of activity of long-acting repository ACTH preparations depends somewhat upon the hormone requirement of the patient and appears to vary with the method employed for its estimation. Following injection of 40 U.S.P. units of corticotropin-zinc, the increased level of plasma 17-hydroxycorticosteroids returns to normal within about twenty-four hours, the urinary sodium/ potassium ratio and the blood eosinophil count remain depressed, and urinary corticosteroid excretion remains elevated for twenty-four to seventy-two hours, while the clinical response may last as long as a week. By each criterion, ACTH combined with alpha-zinc hydroxide is more potent and has a longer duration of action than the same amount of ACTH in gelatin. Doubling the dose tends to increase slightly the duration of action.
