Seasonal fluctuations in the number of reactions to live influenza vaccines

, : Seasonal fluctuations in the number of reactions to live influenza vaccines. Vest Akad Med Nauk Sssr 17(2): 3-9

Local hyperemia and subfebrile temperatures were found to be more frequent in the autumn and winter than at other times of the year, following inoculation of vaccines prepared from viral strains which had had only a few passages through chick embryos. These reactions could be explained by a residual virulence present in the strains used for the vaccines prepared at these times of the year and also by a lowering in the general resistance of the human organism to influenza during this part of the year. It is suggested that the incidence of such reactions might be reduced by making additional passages of the vaccinal virus through human or monkey kidney tissue cultures.
