The working hypothesis established on a theoretical basis for the study of presumed immunological polymorphism of serum proteins in primates including man was confirmed by heuristic experiments. Isoprecipitating antisera were produced in monkeys and crossreacted with some, but not all, individual sera in other primates species. Isoprecipitating antiserum found in a multitransfused patient crossreacted also with some but not all individual Papio cynocephalus and Macacus rhesus sera. Heteroprecipitating antisera to human serum proteins made in P. cynocephalus reveal antigenic differences in human sera and in sera of M. rhesus. The findings are suggestive of several iso- and hetero-antigenic systems in primates including man. The studies in man can now be carried out with antisera produced in other primates. The existence of serum iso-antigens in man indicates the need of serum crossmatching in multiple transfused patients, and the possibility of maternal-fetal serum incompatibilities.
