Specialization of some forms of the fungus Erysiphe communis Greville

, : Specialization of some forms of the fungus Erysiphe communis Greville. Tr Sredneaziat Nauch Issled Inst Zashch Rast 8: 171-182

Studies were made of the specialization of 3 forms of E. communis: f. pisi (from peas), f. viciae (from vetch), and f. lathyri (from Lathyrus). Seventeen species of plants from 12 genera of legumes were used for artificial and cross infection. Under the conditions of Tashkent Oblast the specialized forms of E. communis are not equal with respect to their choice of host plants. The form viciae infects only Vicia spp.; f. pisi and f. lathyri are able during the conidial stage to infect plants of other legume genera, in addition to Pisum and Lathyrus spp. The incubation period in these plants is somewhat lengthened as compared with those in the host plants. Specialization of the fungi in the ascous stage is the same as that in the conidial stage: infection by the ascospores and the formation of the cleistocarps occur only on the host plant; with inoculation by the ascospores there is a much weaker degree of infection of the plant and developmental rate of the fungus. The capacity of the specialized forms of E. communis to infect plants of other legume species, in addition to their host plants, is related to the great lability of these forms and to their variability as a factor of the substrate.
