Studies on Na+-K+-stimulated ATPase of human brain

, : Studies on Na+-K+-stimulated ATPase of human brain. Journal of Neurochemistry 14(3): 333-341

A particulate fraction having Mg2+-Na+-K+-stimulated ATPase activity has been obtained from human brain homogenized in deoxycholate. This microsomal preparation was partially purified by salt treatment of a protein fraction showing no Na+-K+-ATPase activity. Highly active preparations could consistently be obtained from brains removed 3-11 hr. after death. The enzyme activity from grey matter was 3 times that from white matter. The effects of various monovalent cations, azide, oligomycin, quinidine, p-chloromercuribenzoate, and pH on human brain Na+-K+-ATPase indicate the similarity of this enzyme to analogous preparations from other tissues.
