Studies on the level of anesthesia for the olfactory and trigeminal respiratory reflexes in dogs and rabbits

, : Studies on the level of anesthesia for the olfactory and trigeminal respiratory reflexes in dogs and rabbits. Amer Jour Physiol 115(3): 579-587

The olfactory-respiratory reflex from inhalation of lavender, anise, and cloves was abolished during the 1st stage of anesthesia from ether, morphine and 4 barbiturates in dogs; in rabbits it was not extinguished until the early part of the 3d stage. Obliteration of the trigeminal-respiratory reflex from inhalation of chloroform occurred about the middle of the 3d stage of anesthesia in dogs and rabbits. When stimulation from chloroform inhalation was limited to olfactory conduction the respiratory reflex was abolished fully as early by ether, morphine and nembutal as it was from the purely olfactory stimulants.
