Study of resistance to the leaf blight of corn caused by Helminthosporium turcicum Pass

, : Study of resistance to the leaf blight of corn caused by Helminthosporium turcicum Pass. Plant Protection [Zashtita Bilja] : 47-48, 164-168

Fifteen varieties and inbred lines were used in the experiment. The corn was planted on April 26. About 10 ml of H. turcicum inoculum was placed in the central leaf whorls of all plants on June 21, 25 and 29, and on July 5, 9, 15, 22 and 27. Monoconidial strains isolated from different parts of the country were cultured and the inoculum prepared according to Elliott and Jenkins (1946). Individual plants in the experiment were scored for leaf blight on July 31, Aug. 15, and Sept. 10. The rating scale used contained 11 classes ranging from 0.0 for no infection to 5.0 for heavy infection, as described by Jenkins and Robert (1952). Most resistant were the following varieties and lines: Vukovarski zuban, Novosadski X Vukovarski zuban and Hy X L[long dash]317. Significantly resistant were: Rumski zlatni zuban, A X W[long dash]22, and US[long dash]13. Most susceptible were: Rumski X Vukovarski zuban, HY X Oh 7 and Ohio C[long dash]92.
