Taxonomic and genetical notes on some species of Nemophila

, : Taxonomic and genetical notes on some species of Nemophila. Kew Bull Misc Inf (1): 1-12

By the application of genetics to the problems of systematics the authors venture to improve the classification of the genus Nemophila proposed by Brand in Das Pflanzenreich. Brand's species, N. maculata Benth., N. aurita Lindl., and N. menziesii Hook, et Arn., were investigated. All are inter-sterile. In addition it was found that his 4 sub-species of N. menziesii were also sterile inter se and each showed constant vegetative differences from the others; they were accordingly restored to specific rank as N. insignis* Douglas ex Benth., N. liniflora*, Fisch. et Mey., N. atomaria*, Fisch. et Mey., and N. integrifolia*, Abrams. These 4 species all occur in California, and a key is given distinguishing them. A preliminary account of the genetical results obtained between the varieties of the various species is offered. The haploid chromosome number of N. maculata, N. insignis, N. atomaria and N. liniflora is 9, which is probably the basic number for the genus Nemophila. In the related genus Phacelia the basic haploid number appears to be 11.
