Testosterone propionate and its effect on the histology of prostatic enlargement in man

, : Testosterone propionate and its effect on the histology of prostatic enlargement in man. Lancet 236(6040): 1254-1255

A short review is given of experimentally induced prostate enlargement in animals by treatment with estro-genic hormones and its prevention by simultaneous adm. of androgens. The histology of the enlarged prostate so produced in monkeys is unlike that of senile enlargement in man. The treatment of human enlarged prostates by androgens, reported by others, is evaluated. The authors agree with R. Clarke (Brit. J. Urol., 9: 254, 1937) that the results are open to criticism and may be misleading. In this article they record their own findings in a single case. Portions of the gland were removed by biopsy before and after 34 days of daily inj. of 100 mg. of testosterone propionate. No significant change in the structure of the gland was observed. Photomicrographs of the histological sections are given. This objective method should be used in assessing the effects of hormone therapy on prostatic enlargement, since decrease in size may be attributable to other causes. 13 references.
