The appearance of centers of ossification from birth to 5 years

, : The appearance of centers of ossification from birth to 5 years. Amer Jour Phys Anthropol 24(3): 273-299

The 1728 sets of records upon which this schedule was tested were the result of as many examinations of 307 boys and 315 girls of superior physical and economic status serially examined at 3, 6, 9 and 12 mos. of age and thereafter at 6-mo. intervals to the 5th birthday. The schedule was based on the 80th percentile of population. The stated age for appearance of each center was that date when it might be expected to appear in a healthy child with a satisfactory environment. Variation in date of commencement of ossification and in its progressive development was the result of metabolic disturbance. Primary centers were more apt to be delayed in commencement of ossification than were centers appearing in epiphyses. Irregularities of ossification were often found, once a center had commenced to ossify, even though there was no clear-cut evidence of disturbance. Primary centers were more prone to display this irregularity.
