The development of sulfanilamido-pyridine-resistant strains of pneumococci in vivo

, : The development of sulfanilamido-pyridine-resistant strains of pneumococci in vivo. Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek Jour Microbiol Serol 6: 221-226

Drug-resistant strains of a Type 1 pneumococcus strain were obtained from the tail-blood of an experimentally infected mouse after treatment for 6 days with daily doses of 40 mg. sulfanilamidopyridine. A drug-resistant strain may at first be less virulent than the original drug-sensitive strain, but can easily regain full virulence after several mouse passages, without losing its drug resistance. For clinical practice it is advisable to administer large doses of the drug in order to check the infection before the strain becomes drug resistant.
