The ecology of the brachiopod Dayia navicula

, : The ecology of the brachiopod Dayia navicula. Ann Mag Natur Hist 7(78): 339-345

Dayia navicula occurs commonly in the Lower Leintwardine Beds (Silurian) in the western Welsh borderland, near Amystry, and is less common in the eastern inliers. In some limestone beds it comprises 90% of the fauna. From early maturity onwards, the majority of individuals lost their pedicle and rested freely on the sea bottom. Hence Dayia was likely to achieve its greatest distribution in a subtidal region, below wave base, that was little affected by strong bottom currents, and, most importantly, received sediment slowly. Such an environment existed near the edge of the shelf rather than near shore or in deeper basins. As the amount of silt-size sediment increased, Dayia was not able to adjust and was exterminated from the shelf region.
