The effect of harvest, migration, and stocking on the rainbow trout spawning potential in a Wyoming lake

, : The effect of harvest, migration, and stocking on the rainbow trout spawning potential in a Wyoming lake. Trans Amer Fish Soc 91(1): 63-68

Lake DeSmet, a 2,100 acre lake, is managed for rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) production and is a primary source of eggs. Marked trout of spring and fall spawning strains were planted to compare the effect of homing instincts and variations between the strains on the spawning run. Spring spawn-ers out numbered the fall spawners by 11 to 1 in the spawning run while trout from both strains planted at the inlet trap returned 3 to 1 over trout planted at the far end of the lake. Of the female rainbow trout which entered the trap in 1957, 17% returned in 1958 to make up 13% of the female run. The bulk of the spawning run is made up of fish spawning for the first time. Three years of winter and spring (Jan. to June) creel census indicated a harvest of between 2 and 4 rainbow trout per acre which was not large enough to seriously affect the spawning run. The harvest of marked trout from all areas of the lake was independent of planting location. Planted trout (250 per acre) should be 40 per pound (4 inches) to escape perch predation. At least 40,000 spring spawn rainbow should be planted at the inlet to insure a take of 2,000,000 eggs annually.
