The effect of histamine on the development of experimental atherosclerosis

, : The effect of histamine on the development of experimental atherosclerosis. Kardiologiia 3: 45-50

During the reproduction of experimental cholesterol atherosclerosis in rabbits, subcutaneous administration of histamine 1 mg/kg leads to a marked intensification of aortic atherosclerosis and to the development of lipidosis of coronary arteries, notwithstanding a decrease of the blood cholesterol level (in comparison with control). Preliminary introduction of an antihistaminic preparation prevents the intensifying effect of histamine on lipidosis. Histamine administration to rabbits (without cholesterol loading) causes a rise in blood glycoproteins, suggesting depolymerization of polysaccharides by the ground substance of the connective tissue, especially in the vascular wall. Thus, there are ample grounds to suppose that the intensification of experimental lipidosis by histamine is associated with augmented permeability of the ground substance of the arterial wall.
