The effect of the environment in which the parental pair was raised on the effectiveness of crossing and the productivity of intervariety hybrid oats

, : The effect of the environment in which the parental pair was raised on the effectiveness of crossing and the productivity of intervariety hybrid oats. Agrobiologiia 3: 379-382

The crossing of different oat varieties (Pobeda, Orel, Zolotoi dozhd') was undertaken for the purpose of creating starting material. The plants used for the crossings were grown from early winter and the usual spring sowings. There were three crossing variants: both maternal and paternal forms from the spring sowing (controls); maternal forms from the early winter sowing, paternal from spring sowing; and maternal forms from the spring sowing, paternal from the early winter sowing. The highest percentage of inflorescence of the seeds in the year of crossing and the highest productivity of the F3 hybrids was observed with pollination of the maternal plants from the early winter sowing by plants from the spring sowing. The increase in productivity was retained in subsequent.generations. This combination of parental plants produced individual hybrid seeds which exceeded the variety Sovietskii (now undergoing trials in many raions) with respect to productivity, filminess, lodging, and thousand-grain weight.
