The effects of cations upon bacterial viability

, : The effects of cations upon bacterial viability. Bull Univ Pittsburgh 41(4): 32-37

Bacillus prodigiosus and Staphylococcus citreus were subjected to varying concs. of Al, Co, Ag, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, Ce, Na, and K. It was found that there exist concs. which are stimulating to growth, others bacteriostatic, and still others bactericidal in action. The toxic action increases directly with the increase in conc. Bivalent cations are more toxic generally than trivalents, and these are in turn more toxic than the monovalents, with the exception of Ag. The toxicity of the different elements was not the same for each organism, but varied in linear series, from weaker to stronger, and the 2 organisms differed in their susceptibility to the toxicity of the same cation. Concs. toxic for S. citreus were in general lower than for B. prodigiosus, but the concs. which stimulated the growth of the former were usually higher than those for the latter.
