The Effects Of Prolonged Chlorpromazine Administration On The Reproductive Organs In The Male Goat

, : The Effects Of Prolonged Chlorpromazine Administration On The Reproductive Organs In The Male Goat. American Journal of Veterinary Research 25: 523-528

[Interlingua summ.][long dash]Nine male goats were randomly given 3 treatments to determine the effects of chlorpromazine on reproductive processes during an 8-week treatment period. Clinical evidence of tranquilization was observed only in the 3 bucks given intramuscular injections. Of the seminal characteristics measured, only the percentage of motile sperm in the fresh semen was adversely affected by intramuscular injections. The seminal volume of the same goats increased, apparently as a result of intramuscular injections. Oral administration of chlorpromazine to 3 bucks had no significant effect upon any measured seminal characteristic. The chlorpromazine treatments had no significant effect upon the weights of the testes, epididy-mides, seminal vesicles, thyroid glands, or pituitary glands. The adrenals from the bucks given intramuscular injections averaged 2.13 g, somewhat less than the averages of 2.34 g for bucks treated orally, and 2. 56 g for the 3 control bucks. Chlorpromazine treatment had no detectable micromorphologic effect upon the epididymides, seminal vesicles, adrenals, thyroid glands, or pituitary glands. Cornell University extender (CUE), used for bull sperm, maintained goat sperm motility considerably better than 4 other extenders. Measurement of percentage of light transmittance of diluted goat semen was a practical means of estimating the concentration of sperm in the semen.
