The efficacy of two desensitization procedures An analogue study

, : The efficacy of two desensitization procedures An analogue study. Behaviour Research and Therapy 4(1-2): 0-24

Twelve female subjects rated very much afraid of laboratory rats were randomly assigned to three treatment groups. The Direct treatment group received Reciprocal Inhibition Therapy to the actual fear stimulus; the Indirect treatment group to the imagined fear stimulus; and the Controls received no therapy. Each of the three groups was subdivided into high and low general anxiety groups on the basis of their Bendig Emotionality Scale scores. Comparison of fear change measures led to the following conclusions: (a) Real-life desensitization leads to a significant decrease in fear; when anxiety level is not considered there is no difference in fear reduction between the two desensitization treatments; (b) under Imaginal desensitization, highly anxious subjects show a greater decrease in fear than slightly anxious subjects.
