The fine structural changes observed in the rectal papillae of the mosquito Aedes aegypti L, and their relation to the epithelial transport of water and inorganic ions

, : The fine structural changes observed in the rectal papillae of the mosquito Aedes aegypti L, and their relation to the epithelial transport of water and inorganic ions. J Roy Micros Soc 83(3): 235-242

A detailed description is given of the complex structural organization based on electron microscopic examination of hind gut sections. Preparations were studied from mosquitos immediately after, emergence and at subsequent 1-hr, intervals after a blood meal. Striking changes occurred after the meal, especially in arrangement of cell membranes. The implication of these changes relative to epithelial transport of water and inorganic ions are discussed at length. It is considered that a close association of elaborately infolded membranes with mitochondria is involved physiologically in this transport process. As such an association exists in the rectal papillae of the mosquito, it is suggested that these papillae have an important role in excretion and in reabsorbing water and inorganic salts into the hemolymph.
