The influence of plant repellents on the appearance of the white butterfly, Pieris brassicae L

, : The influence of plant repellents on the appearance of the white butterfly, Pieris brassicae L. Biul Inst Ochrony Roslin 19: 239-247

Some cultivated vegetables in the neighborhood of other plants which have a specific odor are in a lesser degree subject to attack by insects. In 1960-62 the Institute for Plant Protection in Poznan carried out field experiments with cabbages. Vegetables and herbs used as repellents included tomatoes, onions, celery, leek, coriander, and mint. Tne plants were placed on the plots so that each of the control plots (cabbage alone) contained 30 plants and on each test plot onion, leek, celery and mint were planted alternately with 18 cabbages. Twenty-two plants of each were used. Tomatoes were planted between cabbages in 2 rows of 6 plants each. Coriander was sown between the cabbages in 2 strips of 2 rows each. During the vegetation period observations were carried out by counting and destroying deposits of eggs and caterpillers. Only partly positive results were obtained by planting tomatoes among cabbages. Other repellents with a seemingly strong, unpleasant smell (onion, celery, leek, coriander and mint) had no detectable influence on the white butterfly.
