The influence of the third molars on the alignment of the teeth

, : The influence of the third molars on the alignment of the teeth. Amer Jour Orthodont And Oral Surg Orthodont Sect 29(6): 311-330

The conclusions are drawn from cephalometric x-rays of the developmental growth of more than 1000 individuals and from the records of the Bolton study of normal development of the face in the growing child. The factual evidence collected during the past 12 yrs. does not seem to bear out the popular belief that the 3d molars are the entire cause of misalignment of the teeth. Failure of the facial skeleton to obtain its complete adult size is a more important factor. These studies show that the number of teeth absent or lost early in life proportionately affect the supporting structures of the dentition and the face as a whole.
