The male investigator in venereal disease control follow-up

, : The male investigator in venereal disease control follow-up. Venereal Dis Inform 24(11): 317-322

5 yrs.' experience with [male] investigators in venereal disease control follow-up have led to the opinion that they should have the following qualifications: Formal university education is desirable though not essential. Honesty, sincerity, good judgment, native intelligence, and maturity are the prime essentials. It is helpful to have a man who is a resident of the community in which he is to work, and it also is helpful for the man to have had previous experience in some phase of health work, as in the Army Medical Corps or as a pharmacist's mate in the navy, a nurse, a sanitarian, etc. The special training of [male] investigators has included attendance at institutes of 2-3 weeks' duration. Their functions are as follows: to secure dependable and accurate information relative to the sources of infection; to do follow-up work for clinics; to serve as liaison officers on detail matters between the health dept. and the police dept., the military, the courts, etc.; and to participate in clinic patient education and in the public educational program, as by showing motion pictures and by placing signs and posters. Male investigators function best when responsible administratively directly to the venereal disease control officer or the health officer rather than the public health nurse.
