The nature of the toxic principle of the scarlet fever streptococcus for rabbits

, : The nature of the toxic principle of the scarlet fever streptococcus for rabbits. Proc Soc Exp Biol & Med 23(8): 850-853

Rabbits were found to be entirely refractory to Berkfeld filtrates of actively growing cultures of Streptococcus scarlatinae. The authors then injected saline washings of blood agar cultures of this organism intraperitoneally into rabbits previously immunized by repeated subcutaneous injections of this organism. The peritoneal fluid collected 3 hours later showed that complete lysis had occurred. This fluid was filtered and tested for toxicity on normal rabbits. The resulting signs and symptoms of toxemia included high leucocytosis, a temperature of about 107[degree]C, and in some animals death occurred in 3-5 days. Intradermal injections of the lysate produced marked local inflammatory reactions. Post mortem examination revealed a congested condition and degenerative changes in the internal organs.
