The scientific research work in the German Democratic Republic is coordinated and directed by the German Academy of Agricultural Sciences. The research work on soil science is carried out at the Institute of Soil Study and Nature Preservation in Halle; the work on agriculture and plant breeding is done at the Institute of Agriculture and Plant Breeding in Muncheberg and in 5 local agricultural Institutes; the work on selecting grain and industrial crops and fodder grass is done in the Institute of Plant Breeding in Hadmersleben; the work on selecting agricultural crops is done in the Central Breeding Institute in Berenburg; work on selection of fodder crops is done at the Plant Breeding Institute in Muncheberg; the work on selecting vegetable crops is done in the Plant- Breeding Institute in Quedlinburg; the work on fruit and soft-fruit crops is done at the Institute of Fruit Breeding in Dresden-Pillnitz, at the institutes of gardening in Markwardt and Grossbeeren; the work on phytopathology and entomology is carried out by 3 institutes; the Mechanization Institute in Potsdam-Borneum concerns itself with the agricultural mechanization.
