The position of Clostridium tetani within the serological schema for proteo-lytic clostridia

, : The position of Clostridium tetani within the serological schema for proteo-lytic clostridia. Jour Infect Dis 97(1): 66-72

Six-teen strains representative of the 9 recognized types of Clostridium tetani shared a heat-stable antigenic factor IV common to the species Cl. sporogenes, Cl. parabotulinum. and Cl. histolyticum. Upon absorption of the antiserums with representative strains of these 4 spp., the agglutinin factor IV was removed and species specific factors labeled I, II, III and V remained for Cl. sporogenes, Cl. parabotulinum, Cl. histolyticum, and Cl. tetani strains, respectively. It was proposed that the serological position of species of proteolytic clostridia be based upon the reactions of the heat-stable antigen. Since the heat-stable antigenic factors were assigned Roman numerals, it was proposed to change the group designation I, II and III to A, B and C, respectively. The Cl. tetani strains were placed in group D and assigned antigenic formulas corresponding to the 9 types. Cl. sporogenes S-17 was assigned to group E.
